Hey there Oppo, it’s your temporarily-at-large Fast Food Oppo correspondent Brazzers McRibtertits.
On October 23rd, the first-ever AZ White Castle opened with the intention of being a 24 hour slider joint. Fans started queuing up a few days prior to opening and fans who showed up later were treated to multiple hour wait times, some waiting in excess of 5 hours to eat these alleged diarrhea-inducing burgers.
At 4am the next morning, after first setting a limit of SIXTY sliders per person, they closed, suspending in-store and online delivery orders until 9am that same day to restock and resupply. Some customers were apparently ordering over 100 sliders per visit, which is insane if you consider a Crave Case is 30 and contains about 5000 calories.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The intention is now to be closed from 1am to 4am tentatively in the first week to ensure that the restaurant can operate within its logistical means.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
In case you think this is just because Arizona is full of nincompoops and expats from the Midwest, this actually has happened before, in Las Vegas, 2015.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Maybe the third time will be the charm.
On a personal level, I like the sliders, but I don’t contest that there are better burgers, and I waited 2 hours in SF for amazing ramen.
I wouldn’t wait 20 minutes for these.

How can anyone eat these without being drunk?
Squeeze one in your fist and see the amount of grease that comes out.

WC is probably my #1 out of town guilty pleasure. There’s just something about them . I’d probably get s ick of them fast if available locally.
Years ago, I even inquired about what it would take to open a local franchise. Alas, too few people around here to even consider it.

I don’t know what your neck of the woods are, but I have also considered the franchise process. It seems to require a lot of capital, though.

Not to be “holier than thou” but I would avoid meat as much as you can. (I love steak/burgers) but if you cut it down to one meat meal a week, that helps a ton.

I don’t avoid meat altogether but I eat a disproportionately larger amount of rice and we’re portion controlling now so that’s a start.

I’ve been back east across the Mississip and yeah I’ve had them before, but it’s been a while. I figure once the initial storm dies down it’ll be much easier.
I don’t mind waiting for my food but my time has a price and WC doesn’t make the cut.

I only eat there occasionally when I need to remind myself not to eat there.

I stopped eating fast food after my mother had a stroke. Mostly from decades of high blood pressure, but fast food didn’t help. After 3 years I feel a lot better about myself and nothing like making your own supper. Occasionally I eat subway or get a big smoothie at smoothie king if I dont have time for lunch.

They’re comparatively bad vs the fresh ones. They have this weird moist soggy thing that happens from the freezing which you can’t avoid, no matter how carefully you defrost. Them’s the breaks.

Phoenix has a great local slider place called Chicago Hamburger Company. Anyone who lines up for fucking White Castle deserves to be stripped of their civil liberties.
My dad is from NJ and thought it was bizarre that Scottsdale was getting a WC. He views it as being on par with gas station food.

I also agree that White Castle is “okay”. Definitely not bad and I would gladly eat there again but I dont quite get any craze about them. I certainly understand the craze for chic fil a, in n out, shake shack, and whataburger. And of course five guys but I still contest five guys isnt fast food due to the price.
Unless there are things other than the sliders that makes people love white castle? I never tried anything else there.

It’s in Arcadia on Indian School and 38st. Old school Chicago sports type joint. The Stand is across the street and has a pretty good fast food burger as well. A bit pricey for fastfood, but on par quality wise with something like Shake Shack.

Is this a Canadian thing? I also enjoy meat (chicken is my weakness) but it’s certainly not good for you and many would agree it’s a lot worse than we’ve been lead to believe. Do you mean Fresco Style where they take off the dairy and add pico? I customize stuff in the app and save it to my favorites so I don't have to get a cashier to ring it all up correctly. But sometimes the kitchen still fucks up the changes. So far I've only been given accidental dairy and no meat but still, it's frustrating when it happens.

We call them ratburgers in NJ. Standard 2 AM go- to when you’re drunk and don’t feel like going to the diner.
It was a lso tradition in college to ‘Castle’ a car afterwards . When you have 50+ empty cardboard hamberder boxes, you would decorate someone’s car. A bit on par with toilet-papering a house.
(cars were typical beater college cars that hadn’t been washed in years, I don’t think we ever did it to a reasonably nice car. well, maybe once)

I’m guessing you’re on the far east side. You’re praise of White Castle makes more sense now. Lotta good hole in the wall Thai places out there, but still pretty commercial otherwise. The owner of Luci’s offered me his new restaurant in Gilbert a few weeks ago.

I’m in South Chandler, not far east. South Chandler is developing into a haven for the bourgeoisie, unsure if you make your way out there often.
And yeah it’s very commercial, but it’s been developed essentially like every other developing mid-to-upper
middle class haven.
The 101 is just a pain in the ass since it’s the main artery to leave that area.
I like Thai food, but not that much. I prefer Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

Eh, there’s a reason there’s no traffic heading East during the AM rush hour...
I grew up in Phoenix and my brother is the editor of an East Valley newspaper. He covers all the development out there. It’s all pretty corrupt. Seeing as we have no water, I don’t think anyone, especially people not born here, should be allowed to live outside of Phoenix. It’s insane to keep expanding outwards in a desert coty with no water.
The East Valley was always gentrified other than a small pocket in Chandler where the ancestors of slaves still live. They’re still living in shacks.
Once the farmers depleted the soil in the East Valley they sold the land off to developers. The developers got the land for pennies on account of the water table being pollutes. Pretty much all the ground water in the East Valley is permanently polluted thanks to Motorolla. The housing boom in the early ‘00s is what made it economically feasible to build houses that far out.
I predict that within twenty years it’ll all be ghost towns.
My boss is Chinese, if you want good Chinese hit up China Chile in downtown Phoenix. The joints at the Chinese Cultural center near the airport were good too, but they sold the building off a few years ago.

It’s all pretty corrupt
Not disputing that.
S eeing as we have no water,
Not disputing that.
The East Valley was always gentrified other than a small pocket in Chandler where the ancestors of slaves still live.
What I mean is that the scope rate is growing much more rapidly than before. It always had more money, but the disparity is worse than before . You talk to your brother, you probably know this.
I grew up in Gilbert and have been living in Chandler for decades at this point so I’m seeing it.
The East Valley is largely populated by people who’s credit was so bad they couldn’t afford houses in Phoenix proper or Canadian/asian people that are afraid of Mexicans.
The houses are now starting to become similar prices , except for concentrated areas of wealth. Everyone (with exceptions) seems to have bad credit nowadays.
